A simulation of shot noise in a camera image, showing the increased amounts of noise at low light levels when the random fluctuations in photon distribution become relatively large.

shot noise (countable and uncountable, plural shot noises)

  1. Noise resulting from statistical fluctuations in the random number and distribution of individual photons or electrons hitting a detector, especially at low signal levels.
